Oliver's Story - Battle of Antietam

Thursday, September 18, 1862

The details of Oliver Stanton Bates’ involvement at Antietam are unknown, except that he took part in the devastating conflict. His military records show no record of wounding at Antietam. He survived yet another hellish battle, and was undoubtedly grateful to God that he was spared again on this day.1

  1. I live in NC and as I was going through some file papers tonight. I found a letter from Oliver Wendell Holmes that was written to a lady in New Bern, NC on December 3, 1866. The Lady (I can't read her name) was the great aunt of the wife of a gentleman that I once rented a home from. He gave me 2 copies of the letter. Holmes apparently met this New Bern lady while stationed there. The gentleman that I rented from lives in the home of his wife's aunt at this time. The home next to theirs was the headquarters for McClellan while the yanks occupied New Bern. I will forward a copy of the letter to you if interested. Leave an email contact on this blog if interested.
