Regimental Matters - New Assignments for Lee and Revere

Colonel William Lee was named temporary commander of the Third Brigade, succeeding Colonel Edward Hinks of the Nineteenth Massachusetts. Brigadier General Napoleon Dana, who had become ill shortly after the battle of Malvern HIll, was expected to return to command of the Third Brigade within a few weeks. Major Paul Revere was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and reassigned as Inspector General on the staff of General Edwin "Bull" Sumner.¹

Regimental Matters - Brigade Commander

Wednesday, December 4, 1861

Colonel Edward Hinks of the Nineteenth Massachusetts Regiment, the acting brigade commander who assumed the role when General Frederick Lander was wounded at Ball's Bluff, was reassigned. Colonel Ira Grosvenor of the Seventh Michigan Regiment was appointed the role of acting brigade commander until February 22, 1862.¹
